Winter is finally upon us, and with that brings an abundance of coat trends. This wardrobe essential becomes the focal point of any winter outfit. As we undoubtedly will live in them over the next few months, it is important we invest wisely so that they will last for years to come. The good news is, that most of this season’s trends have also cropped up in designer collections over the past few years. So, you can rest assured that buying into one of this year’s coat trends will be a worthwhile investment.

From edgy leather trenches to cozy shearling, here are five winter coat trends straight from the autumn/ winter 2023 runways…

Shearling

I’m currently thanking my past self for investing in a shearling coat 8 years ago. There’s a reason why we keep seeing the resurgence of the shearling coat season upon season. Not only are they warm and practical, they are also incredibly stylish. Thanks to designers such as Alberta Ferretti, Coach, Isabel Marant, and SACAI, this season’s shearling has never looked better.

Longline

Floor-length hemlines are having a moment right now. Maxi skirts and dresses have been dominating over the past few years, but now it appears it is the longline coats’ turn for the spotlight. The longer the better if ACNE, Gucci, Roberto Cavalli, and Helen Anthony are anything to go by. This silhouette is already favoured by the Olsen twins and is a style that instantly makes any outfit look more expensive.

Leather Trench

The classic trench has been given a luxurious makeover this season. Leather trenches were not only all over the runway, showcased by brands such as Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, and Alexander McQueen but celebrities have also been quick to adopt this trend. Kendall Jenner, Kylie Minogue, and Emily Ratajkowski have all been spotted giving their street style an edgy twist with a leather trench.

Quilted

Another style that is winning major points for functionality. There’s no danger of feeling chilly if you’re wearing a quilted coat this winter. Christian Dior, Chloé, and Iceberg all agree. The designers all showed heavy-duty quilted coats and jackets as part of their Autumn/ Winter 2023 collections.

Duffel

JW Anderson, Prada, and Saint Laurent all brought a touch of nostalgia to their collections with the familiar duffel coat. This classic style, designed with a toggle-and-rope fastening will keep you cosy and chic this winter. Keep it simple in neutral tones a la Prada to elevate your look.
