Loewe is one of the world’s most talked about luxury fashion brands. It is known for its timeless accessories and innovative, youthful designs. Here, I cast a spotlight on the brand, from its history to its current creative director to the key pieces to shop…
The history
Loewe is one of the oldest luxury fashion houses in the world. It was founded in Madrid in 1846 by a group of craftsmen who, like many luxury houses, started by creating leather goods. Thirty years later, in 1876 German leather craftsman Enrique Loewe Roessberg joined forces with the workshop, and the brand-named Loewe was born.
For the first few decades, Loewe’s leather goods were made specifically for Spanish royalty. In 1905, the brand received the title of “Supplier to the Royal Court” from King Alfonso XIII of Spain – helping to establish Loewe’s reputation. Celebrities including Ernest Hemingway, Sophia Loren, Rita Hayworth, and Marlene Dietrich were also among Loewe’s frequent customers.
Branching out from leather goods – Loewe launched its first ready-to-wear collection in 1965 in conjunction with the brand’s first-ever fashion show in Madrid. This expansion quickly solidified Loewe as a high-fashion house by opening its doors to a wider consumer base.
Loewe has continued to produce high-quality leather handbags and accessories since its inception. In 1970, the brand introduced one of its most iconic handbag designs, the Flamenco. In 1975 the Amazona bag was released. Both the Flamenco and Amazona bags continue to be bestsellers for the brand today, showcasing Loewe’s ability to create timeless pieces.

The designer
Since 2013, Creative Director Jonathan Anderson has radically transformed Loewe’s clothing thanks to his forward-thinking designs and abstract unisex collections. Anderson has further expanded the brand’s client base, which was once generally conservative, to that of a younger, more contemporary audience. His ability to blend fashion with art is what now sets Loewe apart from other luxury brands. It’s no wonder it was just named the hottest brand of the year.
The aesthetic
Loewe’s minimalist aesthetic has made it one of the most highly desired luxury brands in the world. The bags and accessories in particular are characterised by an understated elegance that you can be sure will last.
As for the clothing and shoes, the designs are innovative and statement-making. From low-resolution graphic tees inspired by a 90s video game to a pair of pumps finished with a heel made of a bottle of nail polish!
