What is Mermaidcore? Everything to Know About the Trend Making A Splash This Summer

mermaidcore

It seems the chance to cosplay as a mermaid, once a fantasy for many of us, may now be somewhat of a reality as mermaidcore is the latest mystical fashion trend to go viral. It has taken over everything from runways to red carpets to social media. On TikTok alone, mermaidcore has had over 324M views! But what exactly is mermaidcore? And how do you wear it? (hint: you don’t need a tail).

What is mermaidcore?

Whilst mermaidcore has undoubtedly gained popularity in recent weeks, like all trends, it is actually nothing new. The quintessential mermaid silhouette is said to have been created by French couturier Marcel Rochas and was showcased on haute couture catwalks in the 1930s. in 1933 Jean Patou’s aquatic-inspired gown even appeared in Vogue magazine.

Mermaidcore has several distinctive elements that define the trend. Iridescent and metallic sheens are part of the colour palette as well as greens, blues, silver, and violet. Under the sea symbols such as shells, pearls, starfish and other marine creatures are also a central part of the aesthetic, often appearing on accessories. As for fabrics and silhouettes; sequins, cinched waistlines, scalloped edges, crochet, and so many ruffles!

Why is it so popular?

Undeniably, the recent release and popularity of Disney’s live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid will no doubt of influenced our recent romanticism of this trend. It also speaks to our universal desire for escapism. The last few years have not been easy for any of us, so it is not surprising that we would seek comfort and nostalgia from our childhood and look to mermaids. It makes sense that we would often want to be part of their world than our own.

Mermaidcore on the runway

From New York and London to Milan and Paris, designer collections included mermaid fantasy and aquatic-themed elements. For Spring 2023, Bluemarine and David Koma showed body-skimming gowns and fishtail hems. Schiaparelli showed a scaled maxi skirt paired perfectly with a shell bra. For Fall 2023, Di Petsa’s stunning and ethereal wetlook dresses were a season standout.

Mermaidcore on the red carpet

From the runway to the red carpet, it wasn’t long before celebrities too got mermaid fever. Of course, Halle Bailey donned the trend during the press tour for The Little Mermaid, but other A-listers have also seemed to take inspiration from Ariel’s aesthetic. For example, Jessica Chastain shimmed in a sequined Oscar de la Renta gown for this year’s Golden Globes. Michelle Williams wore a one-shoulder ruffled gown with silver trim, reminiscent of a coral reef to the same awards. Fashion icons Blake Lively, Hailey Bieber, and Naomi Campbell have also been seen embracing the trend.

How to style

Away from the runways and red carpet, mermaidcore can seem like a daunting trend to style. It is best to dip your toes into the trend rather than go full-on aquatic princess. I suggest shell earrings, pearl necklaces, or dresses with a scalloped hem to give a subtle nod to mermaidcore. Iridescent or metallic looks are also a great way to go. As it is summer, many brands have sea shell-inspired bikini tops – enough to make Ariel herself envious.
