Unless you have been living under a rock the past few months, you’ll know that two of this summer’s biggest trends are undoubtedly quiet luxury and Barbiecore. While one centers around timeless, minimal pieces in a muted colour palette. The other provides a playful aesthetic in a plethora of pink. Two polarising trends, two visions of the world.

Here is everything to know about quiet luxury and Barbiecore…

Quiet Luxury

Quiet-Luxury is a term you may have seen circulating on social media. This aesthetic focuses on thoughtful shopping, buying investment pieces that are designed to last. Think a neutral colour palette, no logos, and clothes made from high-quality pieces that form the foundation of a capsule wardrobe.

The Row, Ralph Lauren, Hermès, and Tod’s are great examples of brands that give off quiet luxury. These brands have built a stream of loyal customers who favour refined tailoring over loud monograms. It is more a whisper of wealth rather than screaming “I am rich” by wearing a monogrammed Gucci tracksuit.

Despite what the name suggests, and the luxury brands associated with pioneering the trend, you do not need to spend a lot of money to keep up. Quiet luxury may give off old money, but you certainly do not need to have it to achieve the aesthetic. The aim is to look effortlessly chic and refined. Something that can be achieved through sharp tailoring, logo-less bags, and quality fabrics. Just remember to stick to the neutrals! If you’re still in need of some style inspiration, look to Sofia Richie, the Olsen twins, and Jasmine Tookes.

Barbie Core

It has been pretty hard to miss the influence of Barbie the last few weeks, and not just in the fashion industry. Endless streams of pink have been plastered across billboards, store windows, red carpets, and social media. This trend was largely ignited by Valentino’s “Pink PP” show in Milan for Fall/Winter 2022 but continues thanks to the release of Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ movie and their seemingly endless marketing budget.

This trend has also been eaten up by celebrities. Everyone from Kim Kardashian to Florence Pugh and of course, Margot Robbie, has worn a Barbie-inspired creation.

The increasing popularity of this trend could also be attributed to our desire for nostalgia and imagination. After the last few years, it is unsurprising that we are drawn to the simpler times of our childhood. Barbiecore is a great way to relive the fun of our youth as adults.

If you want to channel your inner Barbie this summer there is one colour that should be your go-to. Hint: it’s pink! Hot pink is Barbie’s preferred hue, but fuchsia and bubblegum also perfectly embody the aesthetic. Like any true Barbie girl, statement accessories are a must for this trend. Dazzling jewellery, shoulder bags, sunglasses, and of course, high heels would make excellent additions to your own dream closet.

So which trend is right for you? Thankfully, this is not a Sophie’s choice situation. You can embrace the fun of Barbiecore, whilst channeling the class of quiet luxury. Probably not at the same time if you want a cohesive look. But what is stopping you from wearing a turtle neck and tailored trousers in the day and a hot pink, sequinned mini dress at night?
