Matthew Hegarty is the founder of his namesake brand, Hegarty, a ready-to-wear fashion brand based in London. The brand was founded with a fundamental premise: to create a collection of iconic outerwear that both men and women want to wear every day. Offering a wide range of women’s, men’s, and unisex pieces, Hegarty uses only the finest English fabrics and trims. Hegarty demonstrates true British craftsmanship whilst also focusing on diversity, inclusivity, and sustainability.
Whilst studying photography at the London College of Fashion, Matthew honed his skill for design. The designer embraced his multi-hyphenate creative background and built his eponymous fashion brand, Hegarty.
“I really had an urge to create something and also make it, here, in London. I had the idea to start my own brand named after my surname and I also saw it as an inclusive brand that was womenswear, unisex and menswear” said Matthew Hegarty in a press release. “There’s definitely a place for denim outerwear, tweed coats, and leather jackets in everyone’s wardrobe which also makes them so exciting to design and make. Everything at Hegarty is designed and made 100% from the ground up. There is a design and manufacturing uniqueness to the whole collection which isn’t available anywhere else. It is possible to create the very best garments at a scalable price in the UK and I wish more UK-based fashion brands would do this.’

Matthew’s commitment to building a sustainable future is to be commended. The designer and his team work with local and ethical manufacturers to perfect quality-driven creations without letting excess material go to waste. The composition of their Unisex Varsity Bomber Jacket, for instance, consists of premium dark navy cashmere and wool blend with 100% real by-product leather and 100% wool cuffs, collar, and waist.
The effortless, quiet-luxury nature of his collections helps buyers develop a less is more attitude to consumerism. Hegarty pieces are designed to last, and when they look this good, you’ll be glad they do!
Hegarty began with two pieces, a Women’s and Men’s Peacoat, but the collection has now grown to a comprehensive selection of ready-to-wear. My favourite pieces include the Indigo Denim Jacket which is made with unique English-made denim produced in the North of England and the cozy lamb’s wool scarves that instantly add elegance to a winter look.
With plans to expand their collection into other ready-to-wear separates and accessories, I cannot wait to see what is in store for Hegarty.
