For fall winter 2024 Diesel did something that is not easily done in the fashion industry and came up with a completely innovative fashion show concept.
The set for the show featured a live Zoom video call with 1000 members of the public around the world. “This season we have opened Diesel up to the world…Diesel is a fashion democracy, so it is natural for us to reveal what is usually kept hidden,” says Glenn Martens, creative director of Diesel. For more than 72 hours before the show Diesel also gave open access to behind-the-scenes areas usually hidden from view – from styling, casting, ateliers and the runway set up. It’s often said that the fashion industry needs more transparency, and Diesel may have just cracked the system!
One the runway, we saw a jersey devoré shirt burnt out as if by sweat, plaid long-sleeve minidresses, coated denim double-breasted coats, and a puff-sleeve blue floral dress. Faux fur coats were bonded then burnt out to show the florals below.
The standout print (though hard to choose) was a Diesel-coded Zoom print emblazoned on tanks, mini skirt, and dresses.
Diesel denim of course runs throughout the collection, but with a refreshing twist. Like black coats and pants that are completely coated then cracked, or a denim coat that’s coated to look just like leather. Denim jeans are multi-layered, whether coated, devoré or jacquard: “I like it when you don’t get things at first, that make you look again,” says Martens.
Martens’ new collection remained true to the Diesel brand, but offered a reimaged twist that was very much needed in the industry as a whole.
