build a capsule wardrobe

Now that we are finally entering Spring, there has never been a better moment to build a capsule wardrobe. Here is everything you need to know about where to start, plus the few essentials items that will help your put together the perfect look…

What is a capsule wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is a streamlined collection of clothing that is designed to work well together. The pieces are interchangeable to ensure that nothing in your wardrobe goes unworn. Traditionally, it consists of items in neutral tones, but ultimately it is about the pieces that work best for your lifestyle. Staples such as jeans, basic T-shirts and blazers should all be part of a capsule wardrobe.

Why should you have a capsule wardrobe?

  1. Takes the stress out of getting dressed
Having fewer options in your wardrobe makes it significantly easier to decide what to wear. It also helps you to get surprisingly creative as you can mix and match different pieces.

  2. Capsule wardrobes are better for the planet
It’s no secret that buying fewer clothes and investing in better quality pieces has less impact on the environment. Less clothing means fewer chemicals in our waters and less clothing in landfills.

  3. You Will Save Money
Having a capsule wardrobe means you don’t have to go shopping for new items as often as you may currently do. Even if the capsule pieces cost slightly more, they will last longer and so, you will not need to spend money to replace them as often.

Sort through your current wardrobe

This does not mean having a complete clear out of your wardrobe and starting from scratch. Most of the items that make up a traditional capsule wardrobe, you probably already own!

Start by working out what you wear a lot and what you want to keep. Ask yourself, do I still wear this? Is it timeless? Does it still fit? It should then become easier to decipher what new pieces you may need to invest in.

Invest in basics

If you consider yourself a minimalist, you are probably already sorted with this step. Having a well-curated edit of staple pieces will maximise the versatility of your wardrobe. Every wardrobe should have a good pair of denim jeans, a few basic T-shirts and a pair of black ankle boots. Each provides the foundation to so many outfit options.

Can I shop trend-led pieces?

It’s not realistic to never give in to trends, especially if you think one particular trend represents your personal style. After all, fashion should be fun and we all like to experiment with new styles. However, consistently investing in trends that last a season does not align with the idea of a capsule wardrobe.

I like to follow the 80/20 rule. Where 80% of my clothing consists of timeless, capsule pieces that will be in my wardrobe forever. These are the pieces I am happy to invest more money in as I will get the most wear out of them. Then, 20% of my wardrobe can be for more trendy styles or stand-out pieces like a seasonal summer dress.
