bootcut jeans

If you’ve found yourself wondering; are bootcut jeans in style in 2025? Then the answer is yes, and let’s be honest, it was only a matter of time. Having spotted several lust-worthy bootcut outfits in recent weeks, it’s hard to imagine why they ever went out in the first place. Of course, fashion trends come and go. Still, bootcut jeans (despite their divisive nature) are as much a failsafe fashion item as they are flattering. Due to their slim-fit nature, they’re also a great choice for those wanting to move away from wide-leg jeans but aren’t yet ready to commit to the skinnies.

What are bootcut jeans?

Bootcut jeans are a style of denim pants that fit tightly around the hips and thighs and subtly kick out below the knee. Not to be confused with wide-leg jeans that are looser around the thigh or flared jeans that have a more dramatic bell bottom design. The perks of bootcuts are that they elongate your frame offering a more flattering silhouette. Plus, as the name suggests, the extra material at the hem allows for ankle boots to be worn underneath.

The history of bootcut jeans

Bootcut jeans were first introduced in 1969 by the brand Wrangler. The style quickly became popular with cowboys and rodeo riders who favoured the design for its practicality and comfort.

The 1990s was when the style became mainstream. Celebrities adopted the style which of course led to a widespread trend for both men and women. Like most fashion trends, the demand started to decline due to a shift towards skinnier silhouettes in the early 2000s.

Yet, over the last few years, we have seen a huge resurgence in many Y2K trends – micro shorts, butterfly clips, capri pants – so it was only inevitable that the once popular bootcut jeans would make their way back into our wardrobes.

After Kendrick Lamar’s denim-clad performance at the 2025 Superbowl, where he wore a pair of Celine bootcuts, searches for the silhouette increased by 2,750 percent on Google! We’ve also seen a rise in several 70s trends of late, particularly brown suede jackets and boho chic so is it any surprise that bootcut jeans are making a strong comeback?

How to style:

The beauty of bootcut jeans is that they are actually exceptionally versatile. As with most jeans they are trans seasonal and their flattering shape makes them easy to dress up or down, so there are plenty of outfit options.

Comfy and casual

Of course Sophia Geiss could make a rubbish bag look chic, but her knack for styling bootcut jeans proves just how versatile this style can be. Pairing the jeans with boots and an oversized leather jacket strikes the perfect balance between casual and fashion forward.

Classic 70s

For a 70s-inspired take on the trend opt for double denim. Melissa Greta channelled the 70s aesthetic whilst sitting front row at the Luisa Spagnoli FW25 show.

With a crop

To dress up a pair of bootcut jeans, you really can’t go wrong with this look on Sabina Jakubowicz. The cropped shirt add balance to the silhouette. But the real stars? The pointed-toe shoes that add a touch of glam.

Smart casual

If you see this picture and immediately don’t want to invest in bootcut jeans, then I don’t know what to tell you! JLO absolutely nails this look by pairing her denim with a perfectly tailored blazer. The structured blazer adds a touch of sophistication, while the slight flare of the jeans keeps the vibe relaxed and flattering. Just keep it simple underneath with classic white tee or tailored shirt.

Cowboy chic

Bella Hadid has worn this style more than anyone recently. Her penchant for the style is possibly thanks to her love of horseback riding so adding a western twist to her look I’m sure feels natural. She often pairs bootcut jeans with cowboy boots, statement belts, and fitted tops to create a fun and trendy look.
