The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show was once the most watched in the world. However, due to an immense amount of criticism and a declining reputation, the annual show was cancelled in 2019. Until this week, when it was announced that the show would be making a return by the end of 2023.

This news has divided the internet with many fans of the brand excited about the shows return. Unsurprisingly, many are sceptical about the comeback and are questioning whether the brand and its values have actually changed for the better.

For context, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is known for sending models, known as ‘angels’ down the runway, dressed in elaborate lingerie and enormous wings. There were always musical performances from artists such as Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. Making the event more of a spectacle rather than a show.

At its peak, the show was a must-see. Every year millions would live stream the event to watch Candice Swanepoel and Adriana Lima walk the runway in the brands latest lingerie collection. As entertaining as it was, it is undeniable that for the show to come back and be as popular as it once was, changes will have to be made.

It is no secret (pardon the pun) that the brand has faced backlash over the years for not being inclusive. Whether is it a fashion show or a campaign, Victoria’s Secret uses mostly thin models, without any visible “imperfections”. Former chief marketing officer Ed Razek even claimed that plus-size and trans women would not be included on the runway as they do not fit into the “fantasy” that brand is promoting.

Thankfully, the body positivity movement has gained momentum in the past few years. There is still a long way to go with regard to inclusivity in the fashion industry. But if Victoria’s Secret hope to stay relevant, they need to focus on celebrating more than one specific body type.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the brand has promised change. A spokesman from Victoria’s Secret said that the show will ‘reinforce our commitment to championing women’s voices and their unique perspectives.’ We can only hope that they deliver.
