The Devil Wears Prada Inspired Outfits To Wear To The Office

Without question, The Devil Wears Prada is the best fashion-related movie of all time. Inspiring an entire generation of fashionistas (myself included) to pursue their dreams of working in an industry that is notoriously closed off. Seeing it for the first time as a child quite literally altered my brain chemistry, and even today, there’s rarely a day that goes by that I don’t quote this movie. It’s also a film centred around female ambition and having a true passion for a career, which is something in itself that should be celebrated.

Not to mention that while the film gives an arguably exaggerated insider look into the world of fashion media, it also serves as a reminder that fashion is more than frivolity.

And while it’s cultural importance cannot be denied, neither of course can its sartorial influences. From cerulean blue to Miranda’s collection of power suits, the fashion inspiration from The Devil Wears Prada is endless. And, even if you don’t work in the fashion industry yourself, you can certainly look like you do. Below are seven Devil Wears Prada-inspired outfits you can recreate for the office.

We’re all familiar with the cerulean monologue, but despite the events of the first movie, cerulean jumpers are very in right now. Meryl Streep, a.k.a Miranda Priestley herself, even wore one during the Devil Wears Prada 2 press tour. It’s vibrant, playful, and adds a fun pop of colour to your work wardrobe. Take Meryl’s lead and style with tailored trousers to keep the look professional.

Black, white, and red is the colour combination for creating Devil Wears Prada-inspired outfits. It of course references the iconic movie poster, but adding a pop of red to an otherwise monochromatic look gives it that fashion-forward edge.

A fitted shirt and mini skirt are essential for the corpcore trend. It is also very 2000s-coded, which makes it perfect for referencing The Devil Wears Prada. Complete the look with a pair of ‘sexy secretary’ Bayonetta glasses à la Gisele Bündchen.

Are those the Chanel boots? Actually, no, but they’re a pretty good alternative for those who don’t have a Runway budget. Andy Sachs’ transformation look has always been one of my favourites and is a pretty easy look to replicate. All you need is a well-fitted black blazer, a tweed or houndstooth mini skirt – oh, and some killer thigh-high boots.

If there is one bit of fashion advice to take from Miranda Priestley, it’s the power of the power suit. In the original 2006 movie, Miranda wore several variations of a power suit, each one acting to impose her confident silhouette and further boost her formidable nature. Teaser images from The Devil Wears Prada 2 have proven that for Miranda, this is one look that stands the test of time.

Talking of standing the test of time, enter the trench coat. If you want an easy way to look chic in the workplace, or anywhere, you’re going to need a trench coat. Style with culottes and toe-capped ballet pumps for a Miranda-approved look.
