Burgundy Is The Colour Trend Everyone Is Wearing This Autumn

In my opinion, autumn is the best season for fashion. The need to layer up and play with textures allows for more interesting outfits than in the summer months. Not to mention the darker, earthier colour palette that quite literally suits everyone. Just like with every season there is always one colour trend that emerges as the IT colour to wear. This year, that colour is burgundy. Not completely surprising as the rich and elegant hue is often embraced throughout the cooler seasons, but this year it really is going to be everywhere.

Red in general has been huge over the past few years. Don’t get me wrong, that isn’t about to change anytime soon, but the go-to colour has evolved to a darker shade. Burgundy, oxblood, merlot, black cherry – call it what you like, just make sure you’re wearing it this fall.

Burgundy on the runway

Gucci set the precedence last year with the debut collection by creative director Sabato De Sarno. The collection for spring/summer 2024 was titled ‘Ancora’ and it introduced a new signature colour to the house which Sabato dubbed ‘Gucci Rosso.’ The shade of deep black cherry was not only central to the runway looks but also formed the new branding for the fashion house. It was spotted on trams running through Milan, on Instagram posts, and billboards.

It didn’t take long before other brands embraced similar shades in their own collections. In fact, when looking at the fall/winter 2024 runways it is pretty hard to mistake any other colour as the new go-to. Burgundy was in abundance on the catwalks of New York right through to Paris. Prada, Khaite, Ferragamo, Victoria Beckham, Ermanno Scervino, 16Arlington, Chloé, Elisabetta Franchi, Emilia Wickstead, the list goes on…
