Argyle Is This Fall’s Biggest Knitwear Trend

argyle

Argyle is quickly becoming the must-have knitwear print for the fall-winter season. Off the back of the grandpacore trend that dominated earlier this year, it’s no surprise that this diamond-shaped pattern once reserved for your grandfathers closet, is finally having its moment. The earlier release of the Argyle movie, starring Dua Lipa and Henry Cavill, no doubt also helped to push the trend into the mainstream.

Originally derived from the tartan of Clan Campbell of Argyll in western Scotland, this print was popularised by the brand Pringle of Scotland in the early 20th century and, thanks to the Duke of Windsor, became trendy in the 1920s.

Today, as well as golfers, argyle is also heavily associated with the preppy school-girl aesthetic, which is always popular at this time of year. And if it is good enough for the likes of Blair Waldorf and Cher Horowitz, then it is good enough for me.

Argyle on the runway

Over the past few fashion seasons, argyle has been hard to miss on the runway. Not just because of its eye-catching design, but because it is forever popping up in the collections of most major fashion houses.

Its first major appearance was in the Miu Miu autumn/winter 2022 collection, before catching on and gaining further momentum as a must-have trend through 2023 and into autumn/winter 2024. Appearing in the collections of Bottega Veneta, Prada, Ganni, Versace, Chanel, Burberry, Dior, and Ami.

It has taken a few seasons to become mainstream, but it’s fair to say that if you’re looking for the next big knitwear trend to shop, argyle is where you should start.

How to style argyle

When it comes to styling, the print itself should be the focal point of the outfit. So, toning it down with a simple pair of jeans or trousers in neutral colours will make you look chicer. Alternatively, embrace preppy style and pair your argyle knit with a pleated mini skirt, knee-high socks, and loafers.
