Let’s be honest: when it comes to autumn and winter fashion, your outerwear sets the tone for your outfit. Half the time, it doesn’t even matter what you have on underneath, if you have on a fabulous coat or jacket, you’re all set. That’s why choosing the perfect coat is so important. It is an investment, after all, a piece in your wardrobe you’ll want to pull out year after year, so it needs to not only look good, but make you feel good too.
If you’re in the market for a new winter coat for 2026, then the first place I always suggest to look for inspiration is the runways. While you’ll want to choose a style that feels right for you rather than just what is trending, looking at the latest coat trends can be a great way to discover new silhouettes, colours and styles to consider. And this season, you are spoilt for choice.

Military Jackets

Military jackets have been slowly filtering into trend reports over the last few seasons, and honestly, it is one trend I didn’t think would stick. Now, they well and truly have my full attention, especially after both Khaite and Ann Demeulemeester showed the style for FW26 in classic iterations complete with sharp shoulders and ropey buttons.
Fur Trims

While fur coats are typically reserved for the winter months, when they are worn for warmth and practicality over simply looking great, autumn makes for a great time to ease into the timeless trend with fur-trims. Not since the 70s has this style been so popular, yet after appearing in the FW26 of Burberry, Miu Miu, Dior, and Simone Rocha, it’s not hard to understand why fur trims are back with a vengeance.

Track Jackets

Stella McCartney and Simone Rocha have proved this season that a gym membership is no longer required to have an excuse to wear a track jacket. This style works just as well with a pair of black tailored trousers and heels as it does with leggings and trainers.
Jacquard

Jacquard is back in a big way for Fall/ Winter 2026, appearing on everything from dresses to trousers, but it was jacquard coats that really took the spotlight. Providing a fabulous option for evening wear when you’re looking to make a statement. The trend was spotted at Dior, Tory Burch, Erdem, and Michael Kors.
Peplum

Peplum hems were huge in 2010, and they have been making their way back into our wardrobes for some time now, on dresses, tops, and now jackets. Dior, Givenchy, and McQueen are big champions of the trend whether on herringbone coats.
Animal Print Fur

A classic for a reason, faux fur coats dominate every Autumn/ Winter season, but this year we’re mixing two major trends in one by combining our beloved fur with animal print. Givenchy and Bottega Veneta introduced a bold twist to leopard print, and Marni showed how underrated cow print is for outerwear.
Capes

Capes are perhaps the best piece of transitional outerwear to invest in for Autumn. Ideal for layering, a cape can be styled with just about anything. Just ask Givenchy that showcased a vibrant, molten orange leather cape as a standout piece of FW26 and Proenza Schouler who showed minimalistic wool and cashmere variations.
Countryside Chic

Dressing like you’re taking a stroll through the English countryside has become somewhat of an evergreen trend for Autumn/Winter, and the best way to channel this trend is with outerwear. Quilted leathers, rustic check prints, and barn jackets all made their way into the outerwear selections at Chloé and Ralph Lauren this season.
