winter coat trends

The weather may be turning cold and bleak, but if there is one thing we can get excited about, it’s the idea of a new winter coat. I’m someone who gets very excited over new winter fashion, and with coat season in full swing, there’s no time like the present to sort out this season’s outerwear. If you’re looking for winter coat trends that feel fresh for 2025, you’re in exactly the right place.

The thing with coats is that, if chosen wisely, this latest wardrobe addition should last you in the long term. There’s really no need to buy several new coats every year – the key is finding a style that works with various outfits and suits a mix of occasions, so you’ll continue reaching for it year after year. And for a coat to truly last, it needs to be high quality. If there’s one area of your wardrobe worth investing in, it’s a new winter coat. Look for women’s coats made with durable fabrics, timeless silhouettes, and thoughtful tailoring.

If you’re stuck on where to even begin, here are seven major coat trends for 2025, plus a few styles ready to shop now to offer some much-needed outerwear inspiration.

Shearling

Shearling jackets are a winter wardrobe staple and are one of the cosiest winter coat trends you should invest in. They are super versatile and can be styled casually with jeans and boots or work just as well as an added layer on festive nights out. This season, Max Mara, Miu Miu, Ralph Lauren and Longchamp all showed variations of this style on the runway.

Puffer

Owning a puffer coat in your wardrobe is more of a winter essential than a trend. Ideal for long walks, daily commutes or for running casual errands – this style will be your new go-to. Chanel, Dsquared2 and Brandon Maxwell all showed classic variations in staple shades of black and khaki. While Versace showed that staple doesn’t have to mean basic with an all-over monogrammed printed puffer.

Scarf Jacket

It’s been a few years since Toteme launched the viral blanket-stitch scarf jacket, but the convenient 2-in-1 design has rapidly caught on, becoming somewhat of a must-have piece for those in the know. This season, Calvin Klein and Khaite presented variations of this dreamy silhouette, cementing it as one of the biggest winter coat trends of the year.

Brown Coat

While a classic black coat will forever be timeless, this season was all about brown. Appearing in the collections of most major designers, from Balenciaga and Michael Kors to Prada, Fendi, and Ralph Lauren, this trend is different enough to stand out, while also being versatile enough to wear with everything.

Funnel neck

If you’re wondering what all the cool girls are wearing this winter, the answer is undoubtedly the funnel neck. Whether on a coat or jacket, this ultra-high neckline instantly elevates your outfits and makes it look more expensive. Need further proof? Just look to the fall/ winter 2025 collections of Chloé, Victoria Beckham and Proenza Schouler.

Animal print

If you’re after a maximalist winter wardrobe, look no further than the not-so-humble animal print coat. Whether leopard, cow, zebra or tiger, this  bold print is having a major moment right now and is possibly the easiest way to be little more daring with your outerwear. Balmain’s zebra print trench coat went straight to the top of my wishlist, while Sportmax showed a leather maxi coat in all-over snakeskin. This is one of the winter coat trends guaranteed to make a statement.

Faux fur

Another winter staple, and for good reason. Many major brands showed faux fur this season, including Ferrari, Gucci and Fendi – each with designs that looked and felt like the real thing. Proving you can still achieve the glamour of a fur coat while still protecting animals. So, whether you’re channelling your inner mob wife and simply after something to keep you extra warm, opt for a fur coat this winter – just make it faux!
