2024 fashion report

2024 has been a huge year for fashion. Not only because we have seen a huge shift in creative directors, which ultimately creates an exciting landscape for creativity and innovation. But this year has produced several memorable collections from top designers. As well as a plethora of trends -some good, some bad, and some that are definitely here to stay.

Read on for 2024 fashion report, including all of this years top designers, collections, trends and items…

Top Brands

The Lyst Index, the go-to benchmark for gauging consumer interest, highlights the powerhouses shaping style and influence this year. According to their Q3 to Q4 report, Miu Miu has taken back the number one spot, overtaking Loewe as the hottest brand. However, in another win for Miuccia Prada, creative director for both Prada and Miu Miu, Prada is at number three.

Alaïa has dominated over the last few months of 2024 after releasing its Summer-Fall 2024 campaign starring Vittoria Ceretti, Mona Tougaard, Awae Odhiang, and Felice Nova. Not to mention the brand’s stunning Winter-Spring 2025 collection, which was presented at the Guggenheim Museum. Creative director Pieter Mulier has transformed the house, earning its place as the fifth-hottest fashion brand in the world.

According to the report other top brands include Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, Jacquemus, Gucci, The Row, and Valentino.

Collections

Undoubtedly one of the most talked about collections of the year was Chemena Kamala’s debut at Chloé. A collection that set the precedence for a new era at the French house as well as spearheaded the latest craze for bohemian style. Gucci’s Fall 2024 collection perfectly balanced heritage with innovation and featured a vibrant colour palette. While Fausto Puglisi’s vision for Roberto Cavalli’s Spring 2025 collection brought bold, tropical energy to the runway.

As for couture, Thom Browne’s Fall 2024 collection turned heads with its theatrical approach and surrealist influences. Drawing inspiration from mid-century architecture and art, Browne crafted pieces that were both wearable and sculptural, blurring the lines between fashion and fantasy. Daniel Roseberry’s Schiaparelli Fall 2024 collection was, as always, a standout of couture season. Featuring otherworldly embellishments, dramatic silhouettes, and bold colours, the collection was a love letter to opulance.

Of course, we cannot forget John Galliano’s theatrical masterpiece for Maison Margiela Spring 2024 Couture. Galliano played with the concept of deconstruction, featuring layered tulle gowns, reconstructed trench coats, and asymmetrical tailoring. A collection that will not be forgotten anytime soon.

Trends

What was the top fashion trend of 2024? Well, it’s hard to say and depends entirely on who you ask. This was the year that Brat Summer was in whilst “very mindful, very demure” was simultaneously trending. There are perhaps too many ever-evolving micro trends that can often contradict each other to really know what is the biggest tend of the moment.

That being said, as I reflect on the year several fashion trends stand out to me. The biggest, and my most worn, are ballet flats. Whilst that is a sentence I never thought I’d say past the age of twelve, I have loved ballet flats this year and wore them to death in the summer. Peplum and micro shorts also dominated runways and proved that the noughties are well and truly back. In terms of the colour of the year, that title has to go to burgundy.

Aesthetic-wise, the “Mob Wife” trend channeled unapologetic glamour and power at the start of the year. We saw a rise in luxurious fabrics, bold animal prints, oversized sunglasses, and fur coats. Grandpacore was perhaps one of the more unexpected trends of the year. Rooted in comfort, this aesthetic embraced oversized cardigans, plaid trousers, and vintage-inspired accessories.

As previously mentioned, Chloé’s fall 2024 collection is largely credited with the resurgence of boho chic. Other runway shows also boosted the trend — see Gucci Resort 2025 and Saint Laurent Spring/Summer 2025. As well as celebrities from Daisy Edgar-Jones to Rihanna and Sienna Miller. As a result, we saw ultra-feminine pieces dominate on and off the runway.

Items

According to Lyst there are a few items that were sought after more than other this year…
